Critic reviews

Don’t just suspend your disbelief – send it to the pictures and sink into this fabulous, epic fantasy thriller ... Lavish, ebullient, escapist
An original and enjoyable escapist fictional world.... The ending certainly gripped me to the marrow
The Bone Season plots out a criminal underworld in a future where clairvoyancy exists; part fantasy, part dystopia, all intrigue. It’s a world of impressive scope, accompanied by Tolkienesque appendices, glossaries, maps and all
Plenty for readers to get absorbed in
Frightening and well-imagined ... fascinating
A rapid-fire wonder of a book
A dark, embattled, highly wrought fantasy
Dynamic and direct ... There is an exciting breadth to Shannon’s world
In this special edition of her critically acclaimed debut, Samantha Shannon performs the remarkable feat of improving upon the original beloved text. The story is impossibly richer and more insightful, assuringly accessible, more moving than ever, and glitters with exclusive content (London Shah, award-winning author of the Light the Abyss series)
Epic, surprising, and impeccably imagined, The Bone Season seamlessly melds a near-future dystopian world, with high fantasy stakes, and a truly unique brand of magic. Perfect for those who enjoy intricate plots and eclectic casts of nuanced characters. Ten years on from its original release, Shannon’s debut remains one of the most accomplished and original SFF novels I’ve ever read (Kate Dylan, author of Mindwalker)
The original version of The Bone Season was brilliant – but the new ‘Author’s Preferred Text’ edition is incredible. Samantha Shannon is a master storyteller and wordsmith, and the care she has taken in the revision shines through on every page. It is a richly rewarding reading experience. (Katherine Webber, bestselling author of Twin Crowns)

Voice actors make or break an audio book and this woman is incredible. Loved the story, but she really brought it to life.

I had been in a reading slump and was trying to find a good series I could sink my teeth into and I believe after a few back to back 2-3 star reads I have found it. It took me a bit to get into the story but it eventually hooked me. The best part is the magic system of clairvoyance. It’s very unique in a sea of romtanacy where a lot of worlds can start to feel the same. Being able to use the spirits and the dead, and the sheer variety of gifts has given birth to gripping battle scenes and an interesting hierarchy and power dynamics between characters. The characters are well written, their motivations and shades of grey believable. And most important to me they are likeable enough that I actually care about what happens to them. The only area this book doesn’t shine is in the romance side of things, I don’t really see it and I’m not really pining after the MMC as a top book boyfriend compared to some other series but will see how it develops in further books. As far as the audio book performance they are very talented and love the way they do the various accents.

Good and building up to something great - great magic system

I’ve been obsessed with Paige and Warden since first reading THE BONE SEASON in 2013, so listen to the newly revised 10th Anniversary edition on audiobook has been an incredible experience! Samantha Shannon has taken an incredible book and made it exemplary! Honestly, it’s been my favourite series for a decade now and I’m even more obsessed. I cannot wait for the revised versions of the next books!!!

Exemplary!
