About this listen

A gathering of seven bestselling crime writers at a Scottish Highlands book festival turns deadly in a wickedly dark thriller that pays homage to Agatha Christie's classic murder mysteries, from the bestselling author of The Bonnie Dead.

When legendary crime novelist William MacRae is found dead in suspicious circumstances at his Glasgow home, Police Scotland's premier investigator DCI John Lomond is put on the case.

After discovering a list of seven bestselling authors–all old friends of MacRae's–Lomond and his team head north to the Ullapool Book Festival, where the seven are gathering to remember their fallen friend.

But a vicious storm is closing in. And not everyone, it seems, has fond memories of MacRae. Or each other.

Cut off from the outside world at a remote country home, it doesn't take long for the whisky to flow, old resentments to reignite…and another dead body to appear.

Over the course of one weekend, Lomond must sift through a web of red herrings, secrets, and lies.

One of them is a killer. But can Lomond unmask them before it's too late?

I struggles to finish this book. The narration is really good but there's a lot of messing about in the storyline and you lose track of which characters are which.
when I was near the end I thought of leaving there and not finishing the last 30mins. It's just not keeping me hooked.

This reader's first book by author Andrew Raymond, his second book in the DCI Lomond series. And as a stand alone it worked well. So well that I was captivated from the start. The opening chapters intrigued and pulled me in, as did the whole idea of a crime thriller book's plot being recreated in real life. The writing was good, too, with great characters fizzing with lives of their own: doubts, confusion, joys and sorrows, self opinionated as well as humorous, unhappy, hard working, brave, sometimes a little bit dim but also astute and resolute. In other words, very human. It was all set up to be a really classic closed house murder mystery with benefits. But somehow the story lost itseway, notmuch, but enough to take away that fifth star.of excellence.

I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already purchased book one in the series .for my next read: A recommended fun detective, complete with Scottish accents nicely (and understandably) performed by the excellent Angus King

I didn’t like this story. I got as far as three quarters through it and gave up. There are too many characters and the story threads are too confusing.
I felt that the main characters were too one dimensional and none of them were interest to me.
I’ve always said I could listen to Angus King recite the dictionary. As always, he narrated this really well but even he couldn’t keep my interest in the story.

Very confusing story with too many characters

Not quite as compelling as his first - but I am still looking forward to the next in series.
