Random House presents the audiobook edition of A Treachery of Spies by Manda Scott, read by Philip Stevens, Emma Gregory and Sally Scott.

An elderly woman of striking beauty is found murdered in Orleans, France. Her identity has been cleverly erased but the method of her death is very specific: she has been killed in the manner of traitors to the Resistance in World War Two.

Tracking down her murderer leads police inspector Inès Picaut back to 1940s France where the men and women of the Resistance were engaged in a desperate fight for survival against the Nazi invaders.

To find answers in the present Picaut must discover what really happened in the past, untangling a web of treachery and intrigue that stretches back to the murder victim's youth: a time when unholy alliances were forged between occupiers and occupied, deals were done and promises broken. The past has been buried for decades, but, as Picaut discovers, there are those in the present whose futures depend on it staying that way – and who will kill to keep their secrets safe...

'The most exciting, involving thriller I've read in an age, and I can't recommend it highly enough.' Mick Herron

'A Treachery of Spies is a masterclass in thriller-writing. It is a heart-racing, heart-wrenching read, conceived with passion and executed with frightening skill. An awe-inspiring achievement.' Giles Kristian

Complex, detailed, fascinating thrilling, surprising insight into WW2 France coupled with a parallel modern detective story. I will re-listen again straight away and this book will stay with me forever. Truly amazing.

The best out of 60 audible books I've heard

I was disappointed with this book given some of the rave reviews it has received. For a start, it's too long - it should have been subject to more rigorous editing to make it a more compelling read. And while the descriptions of wartime Britain and France are well done, they are nothing out of the ordinary. Most readers will also have guessed the identity of Icarus from early on so when it was eventually revealed there was no surprise. The denouement struck me as fanciful in the extreme and totally unbelievable. I was relieved to have finally finished it - I had been tempted to give up about three quarters of the way through - but it certainly is not a book that I will re-visit nor is it one that I will recommend to others. On the plus side, the narration is very well done and the three readers help to relieve the tedium of having to plough on with the story.

Doesn't Live Up To The Hype

I do not normally buy fiction, especially about SOE, so I was pleasantly surprised by the level of detailed research that had gone into the book. It was more accurate than a lot of alleged non fiction books about SOE where the authors get all the facts wrong because of poor research. I really enjoyed this book and right up until the very end you have no idea who the traitor was, which is very clever. I would list this as one of my all time favourite audio books. I hope that Audible record more of Mana Scotts books. I will certainly buy them if they do.

I enjoyed this book very much. Lots of twists and turns and I did not suspect the culprit until told.

I thought that the idea of flitting from the present day back to WW2 was well done.

The end of course is based on the historic reality of the end of WW2 and changing times.

I am very tempted to buy it as a book for my shelves as I enjoyed that much.

In my opinion well worth a listen.
