About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A generation after the events of The Long Earth, mankind has spread across the new worlds opened up by Stepping. Where Joshua and Lobsang once pioneered, now fleets of airships link the stepwise Americas with trade and culture. Mankind is shaping the Long Earth – but in turn the Long Earth is shaping mankind ... A new ‘America’, called Valhalla, is emerging more than a million steps from Datum Earth, with core American values restated in the plentiful environment of the Long Earth – and Valhalla is growing restless under the control of the Datum government...

Meanwhile the Long Earth is suffused by the song of the trolls, graceful hive-mind humanoids. But the trolls are beginning to react to humanity’s thoughtless exploitation ... Joshua, now a married man, is summoned by Lobsang to deal with a gathering multiple crisis that threatens to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any mankind has waged before.

Editor reviews

The outstanding audiobook series The Long Earth is back after much anticipation with Book Two The Long War written by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter and expertly narrated by British actor Michael Fenton Stevens. There are murmurs of conflict spreading throughout the lands. The trolls of Long Earth are amassing while Valhalla is prickling with turmoil. There is nowhere to escape from the clutches of a full scale war. Lobsang seeks Joshua’s help but together can they put a stop to the inevitable? This epic series is filled with suspense, action and fantasy. Available now from Audible.

The language, world and narration are all good. However it felt like close to nothing happened in the first half of the book.

Slow start too drawn out

Pratchett and Baxter are a golden combination. Cant wait to start the 3rd book. Theyre a collective masterpiece.

Book 2 is even better than the 1st

I'm really interested on how the story will continue, but it was the the first book that "hooked" me into this. This one is ok, but one finishes the book with the impression that the pieces are on the board, taking their places, for the final game. I personally prefer stories that come to an end within the book; nevertheless I would immediately buy the sequel to find out how the story continues!

Looking forward to how the story continues...

I wasn't sure about this new series Terry Pratchett created but I thought I'd give this sequel to The Long Earth a go. I found it hard going and at times found I didn't really care what happened to the characters.

Disappointing for Pratchett

This was very enjoyable but as the concept of the Long Earth is no longer New it was not as good as the first book in the series.

Excellent but not as good as the Long Earth
