About this listen

Madame Vastra, the fabled Lizard Woman of Paternoster Row, knew death in many shapes and forms. But perhaps one of the most bizarre of these was death by snow... On a cold day in December, two young boys, tired of sweeping snow from the workhouse yard, decide to build a snowman - and are confronted with a strange and grisly mystery. In horrified fascination, they watch as their snowman begins to bleed... The search for answers to this impossible event will plunge Harry into the most hazardous - and exhilarating - adventure of his life. He will encounter a hideous troll. He will dine with a mysterious parlour maid. And he will help the Great Detective, Madame Vastra, save the world from the terrifying Devil in the Smoke. Fiction Science Fiction Winter

Critic reviews

Dan Starkey... does an excellent job with the variety of characters at play here... Blending Victorian intrigue, Holmesian sleuthing and sci-fi humour to produce a first-rate little yarn... long-term Who writer Justin Richards brings the entire cast to life with his loving attention to characterisation
Dan Starkey displays a fantastic vocal range to imbue the story with a whole gamut of characters... the action sequences are well-paced and the dialogue bounces between the characters at a sensible speed

A brilliant story about the Paternoster gang! Hopefully there will be many more to follow!

Great story for any Doctor Who fan!

This is a fairly short story, based on the characters we've met in Doctor Who - Madam Vastra, Jenny and Strax. The characters are written just as we're used to seeing them on the show, and I could imagine many adventures being written about them.

Dan Starkey is a good narrator, but obviously comes into his own as Strax. His lines are very funny, so to have them read in the correct voice makes them perfect.

This should appeal to many ages, and is especially for those calling for a spin-off - it works very well as an audio adventure.

Well narrated

Best spin off from Dr Who yet, wish they would make these into Tv shows, the characters are instantly likable and it retains the Dr Who feel without having the dr in it! Really good listen

Wonderful, wish they would make a TV show!
