A good story. There is a fair amount of "deep thinking" and attempts (or at least it feels like an attempt) to make the listener/reader consider parallels with our own perceptions of our current world. A novel idea. Whilst lots of "thinking", the pace is still ok.
Enjoyed it, but not sure how much scope there is for more story in the rest of the trilogy. Not disappointed I listened to it, but don't think it's held me sufficiently to purchase parts 2 & 3.

Firstly, I must say that this is not the kind of book I normally buy. I'm more of a literary fiction sort of girl with a bit of a weakness for crime novels on the side. I bought Wool as a response to all the good reviews here, fully expecting to be disappointed. But hey, what do you know, it's really pretty good. There are a few inconsistencies and improbobilities in the plot but that aside, it is a good story which rolls along at a good pace. I certainly became embroiled in it and definitely wanted to know what happens next, to the extent that I bought part two of the trilogy as soon as I finished part one. The book is well written and the performance is good. If you want something entertaining and not too taxing I would thoroughly recommend it. It's the sort of book you want to listen to as you do something else - the ironing in my case. It certainly takes the edge off the chores!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. There may be other books on this theme, but I haven't read them, and this was a fresh story line with many unexpected twists.

What did you like best about this story?

The bleak horror of what humans are capable of, balanced by the human and positive characters, that are fighting again it. Juliet does seem to have a charmed life, but it doesn't detract from the good story. This enclosed world is brilliantly depicted.

What about Susannah Harker’s performance did you like?

Oddly, and I think this is a tribute to Susannah's narrating, I just remember the story and not being able to stop listening. It kept me up late several nights I was so keen to know the end.

Picked up after watching the Apple TV show, and definitely an enjoyable read although I can understand why changes were made for the show- some section drag a bit and some choices feel undeserved. Still worth the listen.

Far from the best of the genre, obvious in so many ways but also entertaining enough to listen to the end.

Solidly okay as a book to pass time with. Characters lack depth and realism. The main character is a nurse/midwife and genius engineer by 32, shes miraculously loved by everyone she meets and suddenly thrust into power for no real reason? COME ON. Lots of similar unbelievable and contrived things.

That being said some parts are moving and some are gripping, so I can't be too harsh. Don't expect wonders from this book but it's entertaining enough.
