About this listen

This stunning blend of historical romance and time-traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of listeners around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills—as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant Jamie Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." ( AudioFile)

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Being a bloke I was looking for a nice time travel adventure but I soon got caught up in the thrills and spills of highland life without missing the real reason for choosing the book. The first couple of chapters drag a bit but keep close attention as they make historic references picked up later on. I was fascinated and enthralled!

Lose yourself in a gripping story.

Discovering the past, through the eyes of an 18th century Highlander and his 20th century time travelling wife, with an enchanting combination of romance, adventure and mystery was completely captivating.

Davina Porter has done an amazing job of bringing one of my favourite novels to life. The distinct voices (and spot-on accents) she gives to both the English and Scots characters are perfect, and if anything, I think I enjoyed listening to the story more than reading it for myself.

My only slight criticism is of the recording itself. In many places I could hear talking and laughter in the background, as though the narrator was inside a building with busy crowds outside her room. A number of times I actually paused my iPod thinking the sound came from nearby, only for the chatter to disappear with the audiobook. It is only slight, but there nevertheless.
If, like me, you are listening to audiobooks at work or in a car where there is already background noise to some extent, it would be unlikely to trouble you. However, if you like stories at bedtime, in the quiet, it may be more noticeable and irksome.

I am buying all the other Diana Gabaldon books narrated by Davina Porter - and although the last two in the series are not currently available, I hope they soon will be.

Beautifully written and beautifully narrated

I downloaded this book after my Mom mentioned how much she was enjoying the TV series. I haven't seen the TV series, but absolutely loved the book. Although the time travel element brings this story into the fantasy genre, it is more a historical adventure/romance. The plot was extremely engaging (to the determent of my sleep schedule as I struggled to turn it off each night and often ended up listening into the wee hours). The author succeeded in creating characters with wonderful depth that felt like they had real history and that the story was just part of their overall story- not two dimensional like so many stories you read (although the male lead, Jamie, is a little to dreamy to be true... but I can't say I'm complaining). Davina Porter, the narrator, was excellent. She had wonderful, distinct voices for each character and her accents really added a richness to the story.
