I loved this book. It was a great insight into how heaven may seem when we die. 5 people Eddie meets in heaven is a journey through his life and how it effected him whilst still on Earth. It's a good book and highly enjoyable to listen to. I hope Heavens that interesting when I go.

What did you like most about The Five People You Meet in Heaven?

It was a sweet unrealistic little flight of fancy.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Of it's kind it was excellent but it is rather simplistic and childlike and I think would appeal to a young teenage reader-ship. I was going to read it with my book club but thought they would consider it to unchallenging.

Have you listened to any of Mitch Albom’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't. His reading was very good and I warmed to the characters.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I certainly engaged with the main protagonist , he was a nice guy but that is all.

I would recommend it but only to the right person.

Mitch Albom as so many beautiful stories, they seem like ordinary fiction with a sparkle of magic. The Five People You Meet In Heaven is definite book you MUST read before you die. You hear about Eddie and his life on Earth and his journeys in Heaven after that life is over. It makes you feel part of the world. Like every moment, action and person are all connected to each other.

With the considerable challenge of leaving work on a dark Thursday evening at the end of a short busy week and with 350 motorway miles and headlights ahead before taking my seat in the Chapel of Rest the next morning - I felt that I was probably in the best position to try this chewing gum of the mind novel which my wife and the girls at work loved and had read years before.

Its a queer thing, Fundamentalism. In all other aspects, like new age racism, I’m the first to eschew it... but where I’ve nothing to say about its ugly twin, there is, undoubtedly, a perniciousness about gently lulling down the M5 with the souls and sounds of the dead sitting behind you there at the wheel.

Politically corrected, of course, we know where it ends. The mystery is where it starts - kind words into ebullience, pride and love into confrontation and hate - and a journey to the promised land via a short cut through the Gates of Hell.

But my Thursday night battle with the traffic and the world outside was about a different journey. As a now middle-aged man, the vivid felt pictures on the sheet stretched on the wall at Gwen’s as she told Bible stories and picked Donkeys and Camels and Palm Trees and turban-hatted merchants from her wooden box to build up the moralising story, easily assumed the role of mind pictures for Mitch.

The buffet lunch at the Golf Club after time at the Crem took the place of the watery orange squash and cup cakes before Band of Hope was over.... and the band of cousins and half cousins, brother and a sister and most especially a Mam without our Dad completed the intoxication. A restful, comfortable lost world that still peeps out from under the grief and the relief that, as it always does, it all ends in tears before we all have to go back to work.

This story, like all religion tells us in detail about the life that we’d have if we didn’t have life.

So what’s our consolation? That there is a big slice of ham pie waiting for us when the curtain falls? Or is it the ‘Hiya Dad. How were they all down in Wales. You told them that we were sorry that we didn’t come but exams and the new job got in the way’ when I hobbled out of the car after completing the journey home accompanied by something a bit less mawkish on the way back North?

This story has inflenced and allowed me to appreciate the people I know in my life and who I met along my journey . I have learnt that we effect each other in ways we may not even be aware of.... Life comes full circle and all questions will be answered.
