About this listen

On the run, injured, and out of options, I had no choice but to go back to him.

Back to the one place I swore I wouldn’t—because staying away was the only way to keep him safe.

Jude Hebert.

My one-night stand turned unexpected protector.

A rugged, guitar-playing lumberjack with broad shoulders and blue eyes that could light up the darkest Maine night.

And the man determined to keep me safe.

When we’re forced to hide out in his cozy cabin, we make the best of it by playing Scrabble and sharing stolen laughter, pretending the world outside isn’t closing in. He carries me like I weigh nothing, cleans my wounds with gentle hands, serenades me with his guitar and makes heat bloom beneath my skin with every stolen glance.

He insists I take the bed every night. Eventually, I ask him to stay.

The way Jude looks at me—like I’m worth protecting—breaks down my defenses. Soon, he’s my protector and confidant, and in these stolen moments, I begin to imagine a life I’d long ago given up on having.

But the danger I’m running from is catching up. Though the answers I’ve been chasing are within reach, so is the threat that could destroy us both.

In the depths of the Maine wilderness, love can be wild, unexpected, and terrifying.

And sometimes it takes a burly, stubborn lumberjack to help a woman find her way home.

Author’s Note: Axe-ing For Trouble is a standalone small-town romance featuring a protective lumberjack and a daredevil heroine fighting their attraction while seeking justice. If you enjoy swoony banter, found family, an awesome dog and forced proximity, you will not be disappointed. Don’t worry, Clive makes an appearance!

Daphne Elliot has given us another feel-good romance in the Maine Lumberjacks series. This time, it's Jude's turn to fall in love, and Mila sure does give him a run for his money.

Mila has come to town to find out what happened to land her brother in the hospital, badly beaten and in a coma. As an investigative reporter, she uses her past experience to go "undercover" on her own to get some answers, and that puts her right in harms way. Looking for help, she turns to Jude, the soulful musician that she had an instant connection with before she went deep undercover. Her trust in Jude is instinctual, same to for Jude's protective instincts. The suspense in this story was really well-crafted, as was the romance between Mila and Jude, an her seamless integration with his whole family.

The narration, but Gideon Frost and Victoria Connolly, really enhances the story that Daphne Elliot tells. They give both characters life that is true to what is written. Jude's protective vibes and big heart, and Mila's determination and caring for those around her.

Another lovable lumberjack from Daphne Elliot

Axe-ing for Trouble is a stand alone story in the Maine Lumberjacks series. I've been looking forward to this one since we heard about Mila in book three. There is no cheating, but Mila had been in another relationship since she and Jude were (very briefly) together. I liked the suspense incorporated into the story, and that we do get the resolution to the story arch that's been building throughout the series.

5-star narration by Victoria Connolly and Gideon Frost. They both had excellent performances and I would listen to both of them again.

I received a copy of this book at my request and the opinions here are my own.

While each of the books in this series could technically be listened to as a standalone, there is a brilliant overall story arc which makes them best listened to in order. Ideally starting with the Lovewell Lumberjacks 4 book series, which comes before this series, as that is where the story truly begins. Daphne Elliot does a fantastic job of keeping the story building throughout all of the books and this one is the finale, where justice is finally served. I read all of these books in KU first, and have adored revisiting them as audiobooks. Brilliant writing and excellent narration from all of the narrators has made these a joy to listen to. 👏👏👏

Excellent finale to an amazing series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
