About this listen

Between death still existing in the afterlife, running through death games that resembled a few videogames I had played in my past, and just trying to survive, just trying not to get squished...Sigh. And between the death of my wife a few years back, not knowing if my daughter was alive or not, and meeting a new friend who mysteriously received all my memories—even my weird-ass dreams that I don’t want anyone to know about—and then having her expose those buried memories to everyone...Sigh. Between all those things, you know what sucks more?

Oh shit, I haven’t even told you about Greg yet. Stupid Greg.

Anyway, you know what sucks even more than Greg? Let me tell you, but you probably already know. You can probably feel it.

It’s that feeling of being afraid of what’s next. To not know what’s next. The unknown.

That’s why I’m writing this. To lift the veil and to tell you the truth. Earth has been hushslapped—my daughters taught me that one. It’s like joining a voice call only to get muted and deafened at the same time. No communication in, no communication out—only instead of you on a pointless-in-the-first-place voice call, it happened to all of Earth...Our entire universe.

Except the Omniverse—our hushslappers—didn’t take into account this guy. So buckle up cowboy—uhh, or girl. Crap, I’m gonna get canceled.

Greg, stop the recording. Let’s try again.

Disclamer: I received this book at no cost and without any obligations.

Anything But Squished is a fun, action packed adventure, in the style of an a typical fantasy in an MMORPG world. The story's writing and narration were are comparable to Dungeon Crawler Carl and very satisfying to listen to with Maximillian doing a great job on the narration.

The Writing
Uncomplicated. There isn't a lot of random made up niche terminology in this book. The concepts and scenes are all described with enough detail to get an idea of what is being outlined. There is swearing involved quite a bit as well as mature topics, sexual references, etc, I'd rate it for Teen+. Dialogue is simple but effective. Each character, even the eccentric ones, feels distinct and believable. The author isn't breaking any new ground with this series, it follows the template of a heroes journey. With that said, I have no complaints of it in this regard. The plot doesn't have any issues with it. The pacing is good and consistent. I don't think this work is made to be testing for the listener, more so, I believe it was written to be fun, enjoyable and easily consumable.

The Narration
A Solid performance from the narrator, the voices and cadence were good. At standard speed, the narration felt slow, but it held up well even at 2.25x. I'd definitely keep an eye out for his other works.

Summary
Anything But Squished doesn’t aim to be ground breaking, but it nails what it sets out to do: deliver a fun, immersive, and effortlessly enjoyable fantasy adventure.
An good entry point for newcomers to LitRPG, and a light, enjoyable read for anyone seeking a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

A strong start to the series and I want more
