Summary

Peter Diamond, the Bath detective brilliant at rooting out murder, is peeved at being diverted to Professional Standards to enquire into a police car accident. Arriving late at the scene, he discovers an extra victim thrown onto an embankment - unconscious and unnoticed. Diamond administers CPR, but no one can say whether the elderly tricyclist will pull through. But why had the man been out in the middle of the night with an urn containing human ashes?

Diamond's suspicions grow after he identifies the accident victim as Ivor Pellegrini, a well-known local eccentric and railway enthusiast. A search of Pellegrini's workshop proves beyond question that he is involved in a series of uninvestigated deaths. While Pellegrini lingers on life support, Diamond wrestles with the appalling possibility that he has saved the life of a serial killer....

Great series.

I've bought a few in this series, not read in any particular order, but they're a great antidote for those of us fed up with the increasing presence of blood and gore in today's detective stories, it all gets too much after a while, and is usually so unnecessary.
Peter Diamond is an old fashioned detective in many ways, surprisingly soft hearted and I love him! There's plenty of laugh out loud moments in the books, and the plots are quite good, too. Diamond is often not too sure how he's meant to react to some of the situations he finds himself in (especially concerning interactions with the opposite sex, poor man).
I like the stories so much, I'll be filling in all the spaces I have in the series, praise indeed!

An unusual plot

An unusual and very interesting plot. This is Banks at his best, you can't help liking him.

Corkscrew plot

Diamond at his best. Lovesey has fun with the complicated plot and surprises in the last chapter.

Good listen

You could possibly say this is a bit far-fetched but it is a very good listen. Intricate plot, has you guessing,. Good ingredients of a murder mystery. Would recommend.

Will keep you guessing

No gruesome details, just good detective work with humour and good observation. Excellent plotting with unexpected twists and turns which which kept me guessing along with Superintendent Diamond until the end. Peter Wickham does a remarkable job in giving the many characters their own distinguishable voices so that I might have been listening to a radio drama.

Foul mouthed characters .

Another illiterate author who has to resort to foul language to build some of his characters, but , then there are all too many of them these days on audible . Pity .
