Story
What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

This book features all the best advice of Alcohol Lied to Me, and the secrets I share with attendees of Quit Drinking Bootcamp. Plus it features all the great sober living tips I have picked up over a decade of helping problem drinkers around the world. The truth is, this social pleasantry is a drug and a dangerous one at that. Alcohol kills millions of people every year, and yet we are repeatedly made to feel that if you refuse to join in with the consumption of attractively packaged poison, it's you who has a problem.

As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some sort of magic elixir. It is anything but. When Holly Whitaker started to look for a way to recover, the support systems she found for recovery where archaic and patriarchal.

Summary
Do you think alcohol is holding you back? Do you think you'd be happier and more productive in life without the booze? Have you ever questioned if you perhaps drink too much? This simple and straightforward book will answer the million-dollar question of "Do I have a drinking problem?" The book provides clear and proven strategies if you decide alcohol needs to go.
If you've made the promise to cut back or have rules regarding when or how much you're going to drink, then this book will address why those seemingly clear lines in the sand are always crossed.
Alcohol is Sh!t will provide you with the foundation to move forward in life without alcohol through:
- Showing the listener how alcohol is the most addictive and dangerous drug on the planet
- Debunking myths surrounding alcohol such as alcohol doesn't relax you but slows down faculties in the brain and body
- Demonstrating how to formally say goodbye to alcohol, so both the conscious and unconscious mind are on the same page
- Shining the light on the primordial addiction: thinking
- Empowering the listener with the understanding that quitting drinking isn't a sacrifice, but the opportunity of a lifetime
- Informing listeners that an alcohol-free life isn't a "no" to alcohol, but a "yes" to a better life and this path can be a lot of fun
- Educating the listener on where and how to start recovering the person you were always meant to be
With lightheartedness, clarity, and no BS, Alcohol is Sh!t will allow the reader to remove the fog created by alcohol and provide them with the tools necessary to quit drinking. Excellent book. I quit drinking a while back but still enjoyed it. I have read other quit lit books so wasn't sure if this would be of any use but I like his approach. Scientific, spiritual and humorous in places. If you have yet to quit drinking, or if you have stopped and just wish to reinforce your sobriety then this is the book for you.

Loved it enjoyable and a interesting perspective
Great book! Paul puts his cards on the table an interesting read with a honest view point with some great tips to create accountability and to question what and what we are doing and how to be the best version of yourself Worth it 100% if you love his podcast then the book is the way to go. Well written well thought out cannot say a bad word about it. Takes guts to do what he does and I think that is what makes the book even better because of how honest and genuine he is and everyone can relate to his story and viewpoint. Also think it makes you feel connected more. Go for it. You won’t regret it Paul is the man :)

Great Book Until it Isn't
it was so good. i really really found it helpful as I am in early stages of recovery after having 8 years sober. i liked that although AA worked for him, he didn't push it. what I didn't like is when the book turned political (the border thing). what does that have to do with Alcohol and staying sober. why cant one stay on point?

Read Now - uplifting view on Alcohol Free life.
I love Paul's book! I was introduced to it via his podcasts which are also awesome. Paul is uplifting, motivating and non-judgemental. It's 1/3 informational, 1/3 personal experience and 1/3 how-to. The book is easy to read. The best part is Paul's overall attitude and sentiment toward those trying to overcome addiction. He acknowledges it is difficult, provides encouragement and real tools that you can use regardless of where you are in your journey. I love that he wants to abolish the label "alcoholic" and "recovery" and encourages you to have fun as you move through the journey (even when it's painful). He uses the term "field research" instead of relapse or re-tread. He injects plenty of humor - self depricating and otherwise. He acknowledges many others experts in the space and provides a fresh perspective on a problem that afflicts so many of us - without judgement. The foreward suggests having a pen and highlighter - but I bought the kindle and audio versions. I may have to buy the old fashioned book so I can mark it up. There were so many good tips and just down to earth practical advice - like what to do at a party, on a date, or holidays .... and he encourages you to make a list of things you'd like to do alcohol free. It's so nice to have an uplifting guide through this journey - the stigma, shame and punishment approach slow the journey way down.

I've read many other books that Paul references, by Annie grace, Russel Brand, Craig Beck. this book does a really good job of providing a unique perspective on the subject, and incorporating/explaining the egotistical mind. this book is very relatable, and it's helpful to know I'm not alone. great book! read it!

Ditching the Alcohol & Finding Your BEST SELF
ABSOLUTELY CAPTIVATING!!!This is a most UNIQUE, and probably one of the BEST approaches, and first-hand accounts of how one YOUNG MAN had a VISION to SHARE his JOURNEY on "Ditching the ALCOHOL", only to FIND HIMSELF. The content, honesty, the science, the statistics, and the real life experiences of what it takes to DITCH THE ALCOHOL and finally see who you were REALLY MEANT TO BE...That right there is WORTH IT ALL! Truly a holistic approach, to a healthy MIND, BODY, SOUL, & SPIRIT. End result: Sobriety while finding YOUR BEST SELF! This book is beautifully written, easy listening/reading, narrated with his own AUTHENTIC passionate expression. At the same time, Paul includes practical ACTION STEPS at the end of each chapter. He is well aware that Ditching the Alcohol, with just head knowledge, without Behavioral changes, inner growth, self-awareness, self-love, and spiritual healing, there can be no LASTING BEAUTY in SOBRIETY. Paul Churchill, who gives much credit to CONNECTIVITY & Love of his team of fellow pilgrims, (online Recovery ELEVATOR/ community members of CafeRE) with whom he has shared the joys, challenges, and the successes, while journeying along the path of SOBRIETY and Ultimately finding our BEST SELVES....well, Paul is onto something BIG, that goes BEYOND "ditching the alcohol". PAUL directs you through a path that will OPEN YOUR EYES to see that JOY in SOBRIETY truly is an INSIDE JOB! CONNECTIVITY is HUGE along with learning to LOVE OURSELVES. THANK YOU PAUL!!! Forever Grateful! 🙏🙏🙏 GeorgiaDee

I've now read dozens of sobriety books so I know good ones from bad ones, and this is definitely a good one! Highly recommend! The only thing I had a little trouble with via the audio version is that the author reads it REALLY FAST so I had trouble keeping up with some of the details and stats.

Not bad good read or listen
This is something nice to add to your knowledge if you’ve read other books about quitting drinking but I’m not so sure if this is The end-all be-all probably not your last stop book wise but I may be wrong this book could resonate with you like crazy I honestly didn’t like the whole white knuckle thing throughout the book it’s all kinds of strategies to help you resist where other books by an author whose first name rhymes with pallen and last name rhymes with bar might get it through your head better just my opinion but overall a really nice wealth of knowledge throughout the book that you might want to have a listen
