About this listen

In a magical dystopia, one young man would sell his soul to save his siblings—and the Starbrite Corporation is buying—in this all-too-real urban fantasy.

Seventeen-year-old Truth Medici scavenges for scraps to eat; weathers his parents' abuse; and battles derelicts, killer pimps, and demons in the soul-crushing stretch of desperation he calls home. Even the cops steer clear of the toxic Harban slums.

But just across the canal live the magical elite, with their wealth, flying carpets, gorgeous mages, and custom spell beasts, all thanks to the patronage of the almighty Starbrite Corporation. Getting there, and taking his three vulnerable siblings with him, is Truth's only dream.

When Truth's performance on the Starbrite Aptitude Test surpasses all expectations, it's the start of a new life. Granted use of the System Astrologica, his access to spells, cultivation tonics, and knowledge—not to mention real food—is limitless. But in Harban, even dreams come with a price tag . . .

Turns out, something more than power has been implanted in Truth. Something beyond his control. As the motto goes, "A Starbrite Man Is Always Ready." But for what? Truth is about to find out. Because he's not just fighting to break free from the slums and save himself and his sibs anymore. Now he's fighting the world itself.

The first volume of the hit cyberpunk fantasy series—with more than 900,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

the lit RPG tag is barely applicable especially after book 2 but it's still well worth the read. welwritten characters in a gritty world that you slowly learn more about as the slumbrat rises. a gritty story that that evolves with the character exploring aspects of the world with him rather than pointing them out and grantually pointing them out to the character

not a traditional cyberpunk or litrpg story but well written and performed.

gripping action, engaging world building and some of the funniest anecdotal expressions I've heard in a book.

came for the free Audible book, will pay for the rest.

this book blends cyberpunk and lit RPG excellently.
a fast paced story with a believable underdog you can't help but root for.
I am very much enjoying this series.

I was looking for something different, and boy-howdy, did I find it! Truth is incredibly complex and just when I thought I figured things out about him, the story did a sharp turn, and I was so wrong. I got to listen to the first with my plus catalogue, and will be buying the rest of the series!

Delicioucly Weird!

A story with purpose. A need that drives it forward and performed extremely well. You feel for the character and siblings and genuinely enjoy the ups and downs while rooting for him. The story does get lost a couple of times with superfluous moments that serve no bearing on the story's progression, but overall, it flows well. The humour is spot on for the world portrayed. A dark, desperate world, well told and described. Well worth a listen…

This said, I should probably warn you though that having also listened to book two, I have nothing good to say about it. Book 2 is a complete mess of nonsense ideas, slice-of-life love-struck hippie-dippy no reason word dumps with no direction that I honestly wish I'd never read. So, yeah. There's that. I still believe this book is worth a listen.

A good story.
