Story
Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

Breathwork explained
A clear and practical explanation of Breathwork. No weird new age stuff here just clear focused explanation and instruction. He brings in his personal experience to illustrate “The Modern Human Condition” - a condition we all undoubtedly identify with.
The first half is explanation and theory and the second half instructional. The audio version contains some very well done guided breathing sessions as well.
After practicing The Wim Hof method for a while (because it just works) I found this book fantastic as it expanded well beyond and filled in my knowledge gaps.
Highly recommended for the breathwork journey.

How do you improve on an amazing read.... turn it into an Audio book!
This gentleman has a beard that any boyish 39 year old like yours truly can only envy.
But joking aside I’ve followed the author for about a year through his YouTube and Patreon Channel.
The great benefit of the audio book is the sheer convenience of being able to listen on those occasions when you can’t just sit quietly but have to succumb to regular life and cook (or cleanup) after dinner, walk the doggy or chase a 20 month round, vainly trying to put a diaper on her!
I love the breath work sessions that Jesse has incorporated in the audiobook as being a sometimes lazy git, I can’t always be bothered to do them directly from the printed form of the book.
I’d suggest even if you are part of Jesse’s Patreon club, where he has many varied breath work sessions ready to access, this audiobook is a nice compliment to the club and also the printed book.
Of course if you’ve friends or family who aren’t avid readers, then an audio copy is a great way to introduce them to breathwork and dispel certain illusions of this practice being for just yoga aficionados!
Have fun with the audio book and be kind to each other!

Great Book that Works as a GREAT Audiobook
Jesse's content is a real pleasure to take in through whatever medium you prefer. It's very approachable and understandable while obviously being based in research, science, and extensive experience. The great beauty of the book is that anyone can test out the breathing techniques to their preference and comfort levels. If you feel anxious, there's a breathing technique to help with that. If needing to focus ahead of a meeting, presentation, class, etc., there's a technique to help focus. If having trouble with sleep, a technique. You get the idea, and Jesse explains how it works and shares tips and advice that are useful even for someone like me, interested in breathing techniques but still the most novice of novices.
Besides that, the audio book is well-read by Chris Strong, who uses great inflection and tone in explaining even some of the most unique technical jargon and multicultural terminology I've read in a while. Really pleasant to listen to.
Finally, the audio book really enhances the great material from the book with a special final sections, which features guided breathwork sessions led by Jesse. These are perfect for anyone who is interested in going further to "dip a toe" in the practices and see if signing up for a workshop or further training is right for them. It's a great enhancement of a great book!
