I’ve been longing for a new instalment of St Mary’s et al and this has been on my wish list since it was first mentioned on Audible. And boy, it does not disappoint. The wonderful writing of Jodi Taylor is second to none. There are many current authors whose work I enjoy massively, from TE Kinsey to JD Kirk and while those two are my absolute favourites in their genre, Jodi Taylor is the queen of her own particular genre, a unique talent in her field. Similar, perhaps, to Caimh McDonnell, she has created her own universe, in which her wit, intelligence, humour and humanity provide me with utter joy, along with drama, suspense, giggles and even, when she wishes to provoke them, tears. A wonderful story teller with the additional benefit to me, of having been paired with my number one female performer, Zara Rahm. Since having to wear specs I gave up on the written word and depend upon the talent of narrators to bring books to life. And what a talent this woman is. Every word, every inflection, perfectly delivered. Each character distinguishable from the rest, Mx Rahm never misses a beat. Her ability to bring character even to the end of a sentence is phenomenal; don’t miss a word or you’ll miss a treat. I’ve written this review 35 minutes from the end of this book because I know I’ll be too gutted to do so when I’ve finished it. St Mary’s, The Time Police, Smallhope and Pennyroyal - what an amazing collection of work. Dear Jodi Taylor - thank you for these wonderful stories and for so much historical content, so many well-developed characters whom you’ve made me love, hate, care about or wish to leave in that awful place in 1942…… and honestly, just for so many laughs! I seem to have reached the word limit, so JT and ZR, thank you for brightening my life and please don’t ever tire of writing and reading these characters.
