Summary

A brilliant new crime novel from the beloved, bestselling, and award-winning master of the genre - and Joe Pike's most perilous case to date.

Joe Pike didn't expect to rescue a woman that day. He went to the bank same as anyone goes to the bank, and returned to his Jeep. So when Isabel Roland, the lonely young teller who helped him, steps out of the bank on her way to lunch, Joe is on hand when two men abduct her. Joe chases them down, and the two men are arrested. But instead of putting the drama to rest, the arrests are only the beginning of the trouble for Joe and Izzy.

After posting bail, the two abductors are murdered and Izzy disappears. Pike calls on his friend, Elvis Cole, to help learn the truth. What Elvis uncovers is a twisted family story that involves corporate whistleblowing, huge amounts of cash, the Witness Relocation Program, and a long line of lies. But what of all that did Izzy know? Is she a perpetrator or a victim? And how far will Joe go to find out?

Exciting from beginning to end

Great narrator, great story. Robert Crais doesn’t disappoint. Really happy to find Elvis and Joe in the audiobook world.

Best I've Listened to in a While

Just finished this, and I have to say it was a definite improvement over the last two Robert Crais stories I've read. Top marks to narrator Luke Daniels, he absolutely nailed it for me.
Thank you, Robert Crais, for cutting back on the cookery lessons, they have driven me mad in the last few books and just seem to be padding to get the word count up. This book was storyline, beginning to end.
OK, Pike literally gets away with murder - Again. It's fiction, I can live with it.
Having read or listened to all the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series, I reckon this is one of the best.

Hard boiled thrill ride

First time Ive listened to an Elvis snd Pike novel, but read several. This one doesnt dissapoint and is packed with gritty tough guys and damsels in distress. Recently the mysterious Pike has taken the forefront of the novels which is a shame because it means less of Elvis the self proclaimed World's Greatest Detective wise cracking his way through an investigation and more Tour de Force as Pike stalks his prey like a panther stalks a piglet. You just know the bad guys are in trouble.
Great narration. Getting Pike right is a task. But the menace is apparent.. I loved it. Its not going to change the way you feel about the World but it will take you on a twisty L A adventure for a few hours. Its got witness protection, dodgy pharma companies, kidnappings, cowboy assassins and a sinister mastermind, is it all too much for our heros? Give it a try!

another triumph

I always loved Joe Pike... the dark, mysterious, tattooed hero of this story reinforces at every turn, Robert Crais as a classic story teller. To be honest, though, I'd read Robert Crais.if he wrote cereal boxes!

only one disappointment

I love these books, the stories never disappoint. But the voices by the narrator of females sound like muppets or characters from the Simpsons.
Also the noises of windscreen wipers or laughs are too much.
It's a shame because Elvis and Joe's voices are perfect for the characters I had in my head when I read the books instead of listening to them.

Cole & Pike ride again!

Excellent story with plenty of the usual Crais detail. Great to hear, at last, what Joe Pike sounds like. Very well narrated by Luke Daniels.

Enjoyed the build up, shame about the ending

I haven't enjoyed the most recent of the Cole and Pike novels, but I still wanted to listen to this new one. Really liked the main part of the novel, lots of twists and turns and a lot of guessing what was going on with each of the characters. I found the ending really disappointing though, almost as if the author had given up and just wanted to wrap things up quickly. Overall ok, but I won't be listening again to this.

Narration is key

I am a big fan of Robert Crais, but this story was ruined by a narrator who insisted on a deep gravelly voice for every male character. I had no idea who was speaking half of the time. The only reason I persevered was because I needed to know what happened to Izzy. I'm still not sure who all the other characters were.
