Summary

The next book in the gripping Flavia Albia series, by acclaimed author Lindsey Davis.

A tragic accident...or was it?

Emperor Domitian has been awarded (or rather, has demanded) yet another Triumph to celebrate two so-called victories. Preparations are going smoothly until one of the men overseeing arrangements for the celebration accidentally falls to his death from a cliff on the symbolic Capitoline Hill.

But an old woman comes forward, insisting that the man was in fact pushed - and she refuses to leave it alone. Tiberius is soon dragged in to find out what really happened and swiftly passes the job to Flavia Albia.

Flavia suspects there's more to the incident than meets the eye, as there are plenty of people who would have been delighted to be rid of the overseer. He was an abusive swine who couldn't organise a booze-up in a winery and was caught up in a number of scams, including one surrounding the supply of imperial purple dye and a family of shellfish-boilers.

As Flavia finds herself drawn into a theatrical world of carnival floats, musicians, incense and sacrificial beasts, can she see to the heart of the matter and catch those responsible for the unpopular man's untimely death?

Critic reviews

Praise for Lindsey Davis and the Flavia Albia series: "Lindsey Davis has seen off all her competitors to become the unassailable market leader in the 'crime in Ancient Rome' genre... Davis's squalid, vibrant Rome is as pleasurable as ever." (The Guardian)

"Davis's prose is a lively joy, and Flavia's Rome is sinister and gloriously real." (The Times on Sunday)

"For fans of crime fiction set in the ancient world, this one is not to be missed." (Booklist)

Another great adventure

Continuing the story of Flavia Albia and her eidile husband set against the backdrop of Imperial Rome. With excellent narration you can hear the noisy Roman streets and the characters are brought to life infront of your eyes. Another intriguing adventure.

Another lively adventure for Albia

Albia balances her new domestic responsibilities on the Aventine with her job investigating crime, this time high up on the Capitoline.

A Capital Story

It is a very good blend of historical background and fiction, with feeling for both

Excellent, welcom back Flavia

Well seven books in to the series and we are on an upward trajectory in quality from Lindsey Davis, the handover from Falco has been long forgotten (who?). This is another cracking Roman whodunit. Narration is good from Jane

A Capital Investigation

Book seven already! This novel shines for the ingenuity of Lindsey Davis is devising plots that hold the interest of listeners and readers alike. Unusual for me I got half of the solution before the reveal. The mix of characters are as wonderful as ever, but I do agree with the reviewer who questions the use of a northern accent for one of the witnesses in this audio-book. It does influence a listener’s view of the character. I love the way that Flavia Albia’s marital household increases its staffing base - and I do hope that this will provide for their increased involvement in future mysteries. The audio-book is excellently read, though I have to admit that Flavia Albia sounds a lot younger than her years, but that may be what the character opines rather that the performer’s voice. Flavia Albia’s world grows apace and I wonder whether we will have a Flavia Albia Companion, as we did with Falco.

Excellent story well told and read

I have enjoyed the Falco stories from the first. The second generation stories are just as enjoyable as the first. The minutiae of Roman life is fascinating.

atmospheric Roman thriller

Another great tale from Lindsay Davies with excellent pace, dialogue and characterisation. I should add: very good narration too. Can't wait to start the next one.
