Maureen Jackson knew life as a trainee nurse wouldn't be easy, but she didn't expect her hospital to be badly bombed on her first shift. Plus Maureen still has her family and friends in Mulberry Lane to keep her busy – she's needed as much there as she is by her patients. Running the pub on the corner of Mulberry Lane, Peggy Ashley is used to taking in all sorts of waifs and strays. But the arrival of a dashing American captain has got tongues wagging about Mulberry Lane's favourite landlady... Janet Ashley's husband is back from the frontline. Which is more than so many of the wives of Mulberry Lane. But her beloved Mike is a completely different man from the one she fell in love with – and what's more he doesn't remember her, or their young daughter. How do you cope when your darling husband is a virtual stranger? As WW2 continues around them, the women of Mulberry Lane know that community spirit and friendship is the key to surviving the Blitz.©2017 Rosie Clarke (P)2018 W. F. A story you can really sink into immediately, although it took a bit of time to get back into the characters as the narrator is different from book 1 & had a very different style for each one.

Lovely story

Great story. Sadly the narrator needs to learn how to do a male voice, and that of a female. Most of the characters sounded as if they were of special needs. So sad as Eastend folk are pretty normal.

I enjoyed this, the second book in the Mulberry Lane series. However, it was somewhat spoiled by the poor narration. I really wish Audible would use the same narrators for a series of books like this. There was a lot of either pausing in the wrong places, or no pausing where there should have been, and this made things a bit confusing at times. Also, quite a number of words seemed to be mispronounced, leaving the listener to try to figure out exactly what was meant. And Janet's husband is called Mike, not 'Mark.'
I also had an issue with some of the voices. It sounded like one of the nurses spoke with a lisp at times, which made her sound childish.
I'm sorry if this sounds like quite a harsh criticism, but it spoilt the story overall for me. And I'm now regretting purchasing the next two books in the series because they have the same narrator.

Great story, poor narration

I love this kind of book. I listen to a lot of books of different genres. The story of life during WWII and how everyone pulls together etc fascinates me. Unfortunately this particular narrator is very stilted and a bit wooden. Although when reading as a character, she can put a lot of life into them. I found in certain parts, I was sighing with exasperation at disjointed sentences and breaks and pauses in the wrong areas! But overall I joined the journey even if it was a little predictable.

Stilted narration but a decent enough story
