About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I am immersed in a new world that feels a long way from my old one. Though I've not been re-invented, what has happened is just as radical and a lot more interesting: I am being re-educated.'

Lucy Kellaway had a comfortable life. For years she had the same prestigious job, the same husband and the same home. To the casual observer, she was both happy and successful. But one day, Lucy began to realise that the life she had built for herself no longer suited her. Was it too late to start again?

The answer was no - so she proceeded to tear down both marriage and career, and went back to school. Retraining as a teacher, Lucy discovers there is a world of new possibilities awaiting her - and learns that you can teach an old dog new tricks (providing they are willing to un-learn a few old ones along the way).

A witty and moving story of one woman's pursuit of a new life, Re-educated is a celebration of education's power to transform our lives at any age, and an essential companion for anyone facing the joy - and pain - of starting again.

I had no prior knowledge of Lucy's work or life before buying this volume. I am also a journalist (albeit in my 30s), rethinking my life, and this was a pleasure. The reading was great! I have a lot to think about reeducation.

a lovely surprise

She reads as well as she writes, which makes it a great audiobook. Not only did I enjoy it and learn more about teaching and about her life, but I found myself wanting to persuade others to read it, or listen to it, especially my 14 year old daughter. I thought she’d understand more about her school life, life on general and her teachers.

Entertaining, enjoyable, informative and thought provoking.

Always loved Lucy Kellaway’s columns and was lucky enough to work with her a couple of times. And NowTeach made me realise that my own third act lay in the classroom (although I’m not training with them). This book was a brilliant preparation for the training year to come - much better than the NowTeach events I attended, although they were useful - as it’s full of her trademark honesty, wit and clear-eyed insight. I love hearing her voice, too, so this was an all-round treat, ideal not just for career changers like me but anyone asking hard questions of themselves sin their middle years (or interested in knowing g what it like to re-educate). Great stuff, moving, funny, enlightening and interesting.

Predictably excellent

Loved it. Listened to it in 1 day without stopping. A very accurate description of what teacher training and the initial year of teaching is like - the great bits as well as the bad. Made me reflect on my own career change and what I'm getting out of it.

Really enjoyable book. Anyone who followed Lucy at the FT should read it.
I also learnt a lot and had some of my own perceptions challenged, particularly around the impact of ethnicity and affluence on the classroom.

Enjoyable and interesting
