About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Sparkling characterisation and inventive plot from one of the best-known and beloved detective novelists of all time.

The 60th birthday party of Silas Kane was marred by argument and dissension amongst his family. And then, the morning after the celebrations, Kane is found dead at the foot of a cliff. The theory that Silas accidentally lost his way in the fog is confirmed when the coroner returns a verdict of death by misadventure.

But then Kane's nephew, and heir, is murdered, and threats are made on the next in line to the fortune, throwing a new and sinister light on Silas Kane's death. All clues point to an elderly lady of 80 as the killer. But as the redoubtable Superintendent Hannasyde delves further into the case, he discovers that nothing is quite as it seems....

I have liked the other stories in this series but this one was a bit turgid and dated.

It was a bit boring and dated

Lovely characterisations, tongue in cheek observations of the upper middle classes of the time. Brilliantly voiced by Matt Addis

Excellent! I enjoyed it immensely.

Heyer is terrific at creating character and the most wonderful witty dialogue. She is particularly excellent at creating comic monsters. Matt Addis is an incredibly talented narrator and manages all the quick fire dialogue and multiple characters with ease

Fantastic dialogue, superb narration

GH wrote some good plots and some amusing characters. This has neither. Endless chunks of discussion as to a possible solution obviously dictated simply to meet a days word count. No twists, unbelievable solution. Avoid.

Her worst mystery?

The narrator's female voices are better than the male and child voices.
That is not saying much
The American accent is terrible and occasionally the narrator forgets whether it an American accent or English accent is needed.
This causes a major distraction to the story, forcing me to rewind to follow the story.
It us a good story, pity about the narrator.

The narrator let's the story down.
