Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Second to none in her ability to make detective stories, Georgette Heyer is queen of the genre.

Slumped on a seat under an oak tree is old Sampson Warrenby, with a bullet through his brain. He is discovered by his anxious niece, Mavis, who is just one of the 10 people in the village in the running for chief suspect, having just cause to dislike Warrenby intensely. Only Chief Inspector Hemingway can uncover which of the 10 has turned hatred into murder.

Georgette Heyer at her brilliant best

After writing many detective novels before this one, here she shows us her mastery of character and humour which have made her Regency novels so beloved (& imitated). The combination of a large and varied cast of characters, lots of false trails and some laugh-out- loud moments make this her best detective novel to date (reading them
In order of wiring adds to the enjoyment). It has been a good policy by Penguin to keep the same narrator for all the detective novels. Matt Addis is quite brilliant at performing all the different characters so each is recognisable and convincing and he reads well, too - beautiful enunciation with no annoying tics. I would recommend this Audible book to anyone who enjoys a well-written story even if not committed fans of Heyer or detective novels

Excellent Narrator

Excellent story and narrator. Twisty plot and lots of enjoyable characters in this book.

Serious & humorous

I really enjoyed this listen! It was clever, loads of red herrings, very funny in places, and enjoyable right to the end, NEXT!

Shame about the faulty audio

The story and narrator on this book are great. A traditional English cosy mystery, written and set in the early 1950s. Charming characters, and a clever solution. Unfortunately, there is a bit towards the end of one of the chapters where it has been recorded wrongly, and 2 versions of the story play over each other simultaneously.

Audible has ignored my email containing the information that they requested about the issue, so as several weeks have passed, I’m assuming that they have no intention of either fixing the problem or giving me back the credit that I spent on this book. So, I would not buy this one for the time being. If they do fix it, I will update this review.

Heyer at her most tedious

Well narrated but the story lacked Heyer’s usual wit and pace. Excellent if you can’t get to sleep!
