About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Also published as A Christmas Party.

It is no ordinary Christmas at Lexham Manor. Six holiday guests find themselves the suspects of a murder enquiry when the old Scrooge, Nathaniel Herriad, who owns the substantial estate, is found stabbed in the back. Whilst the delicate matter of inheritance could be the key to this crime, the real conundrum is how any of the suspects could have entered the locked room to commit this foul deed. For Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, 'tis the season to find whodunit.

This is a decent crime novel, well-written and engaging.
Regrettably the murderer is so obvious from the get-go, that some Blackadder observation re being as obvious as an obvious something-or-other, which has just been appointed Professor of Obviousness at Cambridge university, seems required.
The murder method, however, is less apparent and warrants more speculation as the book proceeds, though some specific historical knowledge may hasten that discovery as well.
A little disappointing is the lack of winter atmosphere, which would make it a good Christmas read. It is set in the festive season, and there is snow, but nothing much is made of it.
Excellent narration by Matt Addis and overall an enjoyable read.

Wonderful narration makes all the difference. Heyer is never plodding or dull, always witty and sometimes downright funny but some attitudes are dated. Really entertaining with great cover art

Matt Addis is a fantastic narrator

What a charming mystery for a winters evening with a lovely twist in the tale. Brilliantly performed.

At the start I found it hard to get involved in this story. But once the murder had been committed and the police arrived the story became compelling. It was good fun piecing together the clues and weighing up the evidence against each of the suspects.

An enjoyable slow-burn whodunnit
