About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Gregory Matthews, patriarch of the Poplars, is found dead one morning, imperious Aunt Harriet blames it on the roast duck he ate for supper. After all, she had warned him about his blood pressure. But a post-mortem determines that the cause of death is much more sinister. Murder. By poison.

Suspicion falls immediately amongst his bitter, quarrelsome family. Each has a motive; each, opportunity. It falls to Superintendent Hannasyde to sift through all the secrets and lies and discover just who killed Gregory Matthews, before the killer strikes again....

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Matt Addis is just a joy to listen to. The story is clever and keeps you on your toes trying to guess who the culprit is. Could listen to stories like this time and time again. A must listen to. Lewis

Georgette Heyer at her best. Wonderfully observed characters. Very much of the period. Clever idea. Matt Addis is superb yet again.

...as other Matt Addis readings. I've no memory of reading murder mysteries by GH as a teenager, so it's wonderful to find them now

Brilliantly constructed and read...

I have loved Georgette Heyer's detective stories for a long time but the previous audible versions had a shockingly bad narrator so I'd stuck to the paper version. I was thrilled to see they had been re-recorded. Matt Addis did a good job on the first in the series but has really hit his stride with this one. The highlight for me was batty Mrs Matthews and he really got the light humour of the books across. Oddly his female voices are better than his male voices. I've finished this and immediately downloaded the next in the series.

excellent narration

Heyer’s strength is her characters and witty dialogue and both really shine in this story of the highly dysfunctional Matthews family. The head of the family is found dead, murder is suspected and allows Heyer several scenes with funny lines and a mystery that is not too obvious.

Witty Heyer with a nice mystery added
