After an incident makes remaining in Glasgow impossible, Police Sergeant Don Colyear is sent to work in a remote Highlands town. His new inspector wants him gone and the locals wonder why he’s even there. Still, Don makes a go of things, striking up a good working relationship with rookie officer Rowan Forbes. As Don starts to investigate petty crimes, it soon becomes clear that there is something off about the town. A string of teenage disappearances has not been given due attention. Then there’s the gruesome murder of the groundsman of the local sporting estate. Could the incidents be linked? As Don delves further into the town’s secrets, it’s not long until his own life is at risk.

Interesting story line although slightly implausible. Not sure where Strathardle would really be - definitely not the real Strathardle near Pitlochry. I suspect Fort William would be too too far away, maybe Acharcle or Ballachullish? Excellent narration by David Monteath.

Great narration

always enjoy David Monteith as narrator. Occasionally some passages felt a bit too drawn out but overall a good read.

plenty of twists in the plot

Discovered this author, and thoroughly enjoyed the story and main characters.

Its crime thriller different from the usual jaded coppers with ex wives, drink problems and personal issues.

An engaging story which kept my attention throughout. It certainly keeps you guessing with an unexpected twist at the end.

I've already purchased the next Don Colyear book and hope Stuart Johnstone is quick with the third in I what I hope is a long series of Don Colyear books.

I'm always pleased when I see that the narrator is the brilliant David Monteath, he never disappoints.

Thoroughly Recommended.

Brilliant story, well read.

This has a strong and appealing main character and a quirky attitude; the plot develops gradually and satisfyingly along multiple strands, with interesting characters and some nice tricks of narrative shifting between past and present. Some flashes of humour lighten serious things, and there’s some enjoyable uncertainty about exactly what we’re dealing with. I was intrigued throughout, and look forward to a sequel.

Unusual, absorbing and quirky police procedural

Slightly different angle on the Scots cop thing, great story, for once the banter between main character and sidekick is actually funny and believable. All brought to life by the amazing performance of David Monteath

Different, fast moving, really enjoyed it
