About this listen

The brutal murder of 10-year-old Callum Bradley sent shockwaves across Scotland, but as the weeks have stretched on with no solid leads, the investigation has been scaled back. Sergeant Don Colyear, community police officer, is tasked with tying up a loose end: a 999 call which may have hinted at the boy's murder.

However, the call was made three weeks before the crime took place. The caller turns out to be a resident at an Edinburgh care home, drifting in and out of lucidity due to dementia - enough to write off the potential lead as a dead end. But when a fresh murder disturbs the city, the clock is ticking path to catch a violent killer.

Another great story by Stuart Johnstone and perfect narration by David Monteath - what a great team they make.

Great stuff

Book two out of three in former CID man Stuart Johnstone’s Don Colyear series. Book one was “Out In the Cold” and if you’ve read my review of that book then you’ve pretty much got the measure of this one too. The three books kind of follow Mr. Colyear’s career, so I am recommending you read “Out in the Cold” before “Into the Dark”.
If you do that you’ll notice the sergeant’s super-power - a kind of soothsaying indigestion. It’s nudging towards the super-natural, and in this, the second book it’s still there, now joined by an elderly care home resident with an equally Delphic form of dementia. If all this is sounding too much like magical realism for you then squash that thought - Stuart Johnstone makes it work very well. This book has gritty and yes, dark, crime; characters you feel you know, and sort of care about, and plot which is satisfyingly complex but not as gratuatously bewildering as in book one. Both are murder mystery police procedurals - somewhat bent and intriguing - my favourite way to relax. I’m very much looking forward to reading book three in the series: “Run to Ground”.

Police Procedural bent, odd, excellent

Love the initial slow meandering pace that lulls you into a false sense of all being well. Like the previous and first in the series this starts off with a hint of the grisly to come. If you like realistic crime stories this series is for you. An unassuming protagonist with hidden qualities and talents gradually emerging.
Looking forward to more from Don Colyear.

Draws you in with realism
