Summary
『魔術』 あらすじ:ある時雨の降る晩、「私」はマティラム・ミスラ君(ハッサン・カンという名高い婆羅門の秘法を学んだ、年の若い魔術の大家)の家を、魔術を使って見せてもらうために訪ねる。その家で「私」は魔術を体験することとなる。いくつかの不可思議を体験したのち「私」はミスラ君に頼み魔術を教えてもらうこととなる。ミスラ君が言うにはハッサン・カンの魔術を習おうと思ったら、まず欲を捨てなければならないとの事である。ミスラ君に魔術を習い一ヶ月ほどたったころ「私」は友人たちの前で魔術を披露することになるのだが「私」は欲を捨てていないことを思い知らされる。「私」が一月ばかりたったと思ったのは、ほんの二三分の間に見た、夢だったのである……。 『蜜柑』 あらすじ:ある冬の日暮。「私」は横須賀発上り二等客車の隅に腰を下し、ぼんやり発車の笛を待つていた。やがて発車の笛が鳴り、十三四の小娘が一人、慌(あわただ)しく中へはいつて来る。そしてその小娘は「私」の隣に座る。汽車はトンネルへはいり、そしてトンネルからやっと出たと思ったその時、踏切りの柵の向うに、「私」は頬の赤い三人の男の子が並んで立つているのを見た。暖な日の色に染まつている蜜柑が五つ六つ、汽車を見送つた子供たちの上へばらばらと空から降つている。小娘は、蜜柑を窓から投げて、わざわざ踏切りまで見送りに来た弟たちの労に報いたのである……。
