露置きてくれなゐいとど深けれど
おもひ悩めるなでしこの花

行方の知れぬ娘を探していた内大臣は、自ら娘だと名乗り出た近江の君（おうみのきみ）を引きとるが、その扱いに困り果てていた。真実を知らぬ内大臣は玉鬘を擁する源氏をねたましく思い、娘雲居雁（くもいのかり）が自分の思う通りにならなかったことを残念がる。
一方、玉鬘は実父内大臣と養父光源氏の仲を心配し、心を痛めていた。
内大臣は、近江の君を娘弘徽殿女御（こきでんのにょご）のそばにおいて、あらためて教育させることにする。近江の君は喜んで弘徽殿女御に歌を贈るが、その歌のおかしさに弘徽殿女御や女房たちは驚き、笑いを隠せない。返歌に困った弘徽殿女御は女房に代筆をさせるが、そんなことにまったく気がつかない近江の君は返事がきたことを単純に喜び、いそいそと弘徽殿女御のもとに行く準備をしていた。
