大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の代表的な小説。初出は「大調和」［春秋社、1927（昭和2）年］に「一 レエン・コート」の章が表題「歯車」として掲載、芥川の没後「文藝春秋」［文藝春秋社、同年］に全編掲載。「芥川竜之介集」［改造社、1928（昭和3）年］に収録。全6章で構成され、避暑地から都心に出かけた「僕」が次々にキーワードに襲われる強迫観念に囚われる。全体として奇妙な筋書きの話。
