人間を機関車になぞらえて語られている短編小説で、芥川龍之介の遺稿である。

子供たちは、よく機関車の真似をしている。それは機関車に威力を感じ、また自身も機関車のように激しい生命を持ちたいと思っているからだろう。
機関車は、目的地に向かって突進し軌道の上を走っている。人間もまた、名誉、金銭などといった目的に向かって自由に突き進みたいという欲望を抱いており、そのせいで自ずから自由を失っているような所がある。
これは逆説的な人生の事実である。

芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
