大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の代表的な童話。初出は「赤い鳥」［鈴木三重吉主宰、1920（大正9）年］。短編集「夜来の花」［新潮社、1921（大正10）年］に収録。親の財産を使い果たした青年「杜子春」の前に老人が現れ、老人の指示通りに穴を掘ると大金が見つかる。その後も老人は度々現れる。原典は鄭還古「杜子春伝」。教育教材としても多く論じられてきた。
