Zack Kaplan is the author of Three Graves and Hyena’s Hat. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, he now lives in Santa Monica, California.

Like any ordinary reverse Benjamin Button, Zack began life as a tiny baby and eventually became an adult—with a few hiccups along the way. At twelve, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and underwent chemotherapy and radiation. Disappointed that radiation granted him no superpowers, he quickly concluded that the illness was all downside.

When treatment caused his hair to fall out, his parents—equal parts loving, naïve, and thrifty—bought him an old-lady wig from an old-school wig shop. It took one day of junior high for him to realize that he looked like Estelle Getty. He opted for hats instead.

That experience helped shape the dark sense of humor, resilience, and unconventional perspective that are unmistakable in his writing.
