The Stoneburners- Together, the Stoneburners write fiction that resists easy conclusions. Their collaborative work blends structural rigor with emotional truth, drawing upon history, folklore, military experience, mythology, and the enduring power of storytelling. Whether writing Southern Gothic fiction, historical narratives, speculative tales, or works that defy simple classification, they are drawn to stories that examine how people endure hardship, how communities carry memory, and how the past continues to shape the present. Their work challenges readers to confront difficult truths while remaining deeply rooted in character, place, and the enduring belief that stories matter. For the Stoneburners, storytelling is more than entertainment, it is a way of preserving memory, honoring inheritance, and exploring the questions that define what it means to be human. R.J. “Josh” Stoneburner- R.J. “Josh” Stoneburner served more than twenty years in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence branch, specializing in complex global operations and geopolitical analysis. His career took him across continents, shaping a deep understanding of conflict, loyalty, and the long shadows war casts over memory. Captivated by fables and storytelling from an early age, he spent his childhood filling journals and scraps of paper with stories, discovering that imagination could open doors into hidden worlds and reveal truths that linger just beneath the surface of everyday life. His work is shaped by a lifelong love of folklore, history, and memory, often weaving the intimate details of family life with the larger currents of time and place. He is especially drawn to the ways stories, whether whispered in kitchens, told by firelight, or passed down through generations, carry both wounds and wisdom. To him, storytelling is not only art, but inheritance. With a voice both lyrical and unflinching, he writes to honor the power of stories that endure and to create new ones that linger long after the final page. Velma Loftin-Stoneburner- Velma Loftin-Stoneburner is a Southern writer whose work carries the cadence of hymns, folktales, and the storytelling traditions of the American South. Rooted in the pine forests and backroads of Louisiana, her fiction lives between history and myth, memory and invention. She spent a decade training soldiers in immersive pre-deployment environments designed to replicate the cultural and tactical realities of Iraq and Afghanistan. With several generations of her family having served in the military, that work became both vocation and legacy. A lifelong student of Southern history, folklore, and women's hidden narratives, she writes of endurance, silence, faith, and the lasting legacies of war and family. Her characters embody the quiet strength of matriarchs, the resilience passed down through generations, and the burdens carried by that history often leaves unnamed. With her husband, R.J. “Josh” Stoneburner, she co-authors fiction that blends history, folklore, mythology, and the complexities of the human experience. Their stories move between Southern Gothic landscapes, historical settings, and imagined worlds, exploring memory, identity, resilience, conflict, and the burdens and gifts of inheritance. Velma often returns to themes of violence as destiny, silence as defiance, and inheritance as both blessing and burden. She resists tidy endings, preferring stories that unsettle, challenge, and echo long after the last page. She lives in Merryville, Louisiana, with her husband, where she gathers stories, tends her animals, runs a small business and works to preserve the old songs, voices, and traditions of the South.
