Tom Rosenstiel is the author of 12 books including four novels. His newest book is The Next Journalism: How the Press Must Change to Serve Democracy, (August 2026, Crown/Penguin Random House). His book, The Elements of Journalism, co-authored with Bill Kovach, has been called by the Wall Street Journal "one of the best five books" on journalism ever written," (Wall Street Journal), has been translated into more than 25 languages and is used in journalism schools across the US and worldwide. His political thrillers feature the fixers Peter Rena and Randi Brooks. A professor at the University of Maryland and a senior fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago, he was a national correspondent for the LA Times and Newsweek, executive director of the American Press Institute and founded and for 16 years directed media research at the Pew Research Center in Washington. He lives outside Washington, D.C.
