My new book, AIMLESSNESS, will be published by Columbia University Press on January 26, 2021. My first novel, BORN SLIPPY: A NOVEL was published January 14, 2020. I am the author of three books of travel narrative — The Kindness of Strangers (coming out in Fall 2021 from University of Iowa Press), And The Monkey Learned Nothing (2017), and Drinking Mare’s Milk on the Roof of the World (2016)— the cultural histories Doing Nothing and Crying; literary histories Cosmopolitan Vistas and American Nervousness, 1903; pieces for New York Times, LA Times, ZYZZYVA, Exquisite Corpse, New Republic, Salon, Black Clock, Iowa Review, and other places. And Rare Bird Lit is publishing a volume of photographs from my travels —Portraits: Moments of Intimacy on the Road — in fall 2021. I’m a Distinguished Professor and Chair of Creative Writing at the UC Riverside, the founding editor in chief of the Los Angeles Review of Books, founder of The LARB Radio Hour, The LARB Quarterly Journal, The LARB/USC Publishing Workshop, and LARB Books.
