"A richly told adventure that explores the meaning of family and the power of grit." —Kirkus Reviews It’s rare to hear an author say that she hated to read when she was young, but that was the case for Terry Sue Harms. After a childhood of near illiteracy, she taught herself to read and write as a young adult, eventually going on to receive a BA degree in English from Mills College. She began writing for publication in her mid-forties when a story arrived in her imagination and wouldn’t leave. That insistent fiction, after four years of shaping, became her first novel, "Pearls My Mother Wore". "The Strongbox: Searching For My Absent Father" is her third book, a memoir. For Terry Sue, the challenges of writing are offset by gratitude, gratitude for having come so far. Harms crafts sentences with an ear for uncomplicated prose and syntax, creating stories that are intimate and conversational. Having been a hairdresser and salon owner for over forty years, she finds that her powers of observation and good communication skills have served both her work as a cosmetologist and as a writer; plus, when it comes to studying the human condition, few places are better than the beauty shop. Terry Sue lives in scenic Sonoma, California with her husband.
