Two events changed Steve’s life for the better and inspired the book, “Suzy and the Sidecar.” In the summer of 1972, after high school, he embarked with a friend on a cross-country motorcycle trip spanning two months and over 11,000 miles. The next year he met Lugene. This book was largely written in 1973-1975 and expanded, edited and published 50 years later.
The novel was originally written on a red "Valentine" Olivetti typewriter in duplicate using carbon paper. The manuscript laid dormant for 50 years in various basements as I moved around the country during my career in the energy industry. Then in 2025 the novel was “discovered,” expanded, edited, and published. Final revisions were made in 2026. The availability now of self-publishing platforms, editing software and other technology was not something we could have ever envisioned 50+ years ago.
The audiobook version, released in March 2026, includes musical preludes layered into the story by Philip Miller. The preludes surround and set the tone for the story of two young lovers searching for a future in the tumultuous 1970s.
“Suzy and the Sidecar” is a prequel to “Suzy the Cycle Witch,” a rock opera recently completed by Thomas Glover, a high school friend of Steve's. “Suzy the Cycle Witch” includes songs largely composed in the early 1970s by Tom Glover with input from Stephen Miller. AI generated music videos of each rock opera song are now streaming on YouTube and other platforms.
After retiring in 2013 from a career in the energy industry, Lugene and Steve opened Liberty Apple Orchard, a family-owned U-pick orchard located in Edwardsville, IL. They reside at the orchard and have been blessed with four daughters and 11 grandchildren.
