From the Appalachian mountains in rural Western North Carolina, Dr. Shannon Dowler has over 20 years experience as a board certified Family Physician, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and Certified Physician Executive. From national roles on commissions with the CDC/HRSA, American Academy of Family Physicians and American College of Ob-Gyn, to her state level health policy, equity and access work with the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Dowler has committed her career to driving improvements in quality while reducing health disparities. Dr. Dowler has enjoyed a special interest in sexual health and has over 20 years in the local health department STD clinic. An avid educator, there is no audience she does not enjoy teaching about attaining and maintaining sexual health. From rap videos to limericks, Dr. Dowler uses humor to make the information accessible, enjoyable, and most of all memorable! A mother of two college aged boys and she lives on the side of a mountain with two rescue dogs, nine chickens, and her high school sweetheart.
