Dr. Sara Dant is an award-winning writer, historian, distinguished professor emeritus, runner, and avid outdoor enthusiast who lives outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her latest book, Losing Eden: An Environmental History of the American West (2023), with a foreword by former NM Senator Tom S. Udall (son of Stewart Udall), a “big history” of the interaction between people and nature across twenty-five thousand years in the West. Reviewers have generously praised the writing, clarity, and breadth of Losing Eden, calling it “a brilliant book,” “stunning,” and “a powerful, irreplaceable environmental history.” In 2023, she was featured as an advisor and interviewee for Ken Burns' The American Buffalo documentary film. Sara's writing focuses on environmental politics in the United States with a particular emphasis on the creation and development of consensus and bi-partisanism. She has also provided expert witness research and testimony, including a precedent-setting report on Stream Navigability upheld by the Utah Supreme Court. Dr. Dant is Presidential Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of History from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. She was born and raised in the West, received all of her degrees from western universities, and is proud to live where the air is dry and the mountains are high.
