For more than 25 years, Ryan Wakefield has worked as a graphic and multimedia designer, but his heart has always been drawn to storytelling. Ever since childhood, he dreamed of creating a fantasy world where young readers could escape, explore, and let their imaginations soar.

One of Ryan's earliest fascinations was animal hybrids. He loved imagining what might happen if two or three different animals were blended together to create an entirely new and extraordinary species. That lifelong curiosity, combined with his passion for fantasy, ultimately inspired him to bring his dream to life through Jumbalot, a vibrant world filled with adventure, wonder, and unforgettable creatures for middle-grade readers to discover.

Ryan is also the proud co-parent of a mischievous pug named Sophie and a sometimes-stubborn feline named Ash. Many of the characters in Jumbalot were inspired by beloved pets who left lasting pawprints on his heart. The story's protagonist, Alby, is based on Ryan's first pet, an oversized black-and-white housecat named Albert. The only thing bigger than Albert's appetite was his heart, and he is deeply missed.

Queen Lola was inspired by his wife's first pug, Lola, whose joyful spirit and lovable personality helped shape the character. Though Lola sadly passed away after a battle with poor health, her memory lives on in the pages of the story.

Ryan and his wife are passionate advocates for pet adoption and encourage everyone to consider opening their hearts and homes to animals in need.
