I’m Ronny Schmidt, born in 1975. I used to be a paratrooper. That’s the job where you voluntarily jump out of perfectly good aircraft, only to land in the mud. Excellent preparation for discovering that a convincing idea and its practical execution can be separated by several painful meters.

Today, I own Urban Defense and Team-Survival. For many years, I’ve been teaching people how to keep a clear head when normality has other commitments. Whether out in the wilderness or in the middle of a city, the ability to act usually begins with a sensible decision. People tend to skip that part. After all, the equipment has already been purchased, and everything looked perfectly manageable in the promotional video.

My books explore survival, self-protection, psychology, personal responsibility, and social developments. I’m interested in what actually helps people under pressure—and why we expend so much energy convincing ourselves otherwise. Constant repetition initially makes a claim more familiar. Its accuracy, unfortunately, still requires a separate investigation. Even a majority opinion should occasionally have to produce its paperwork.

I include my own convictions in that examination. Anyone who makes a living explaining other people’s errors in judgment should occasionally turn the lights on inside their own worldview. Experience is valuable. It can also mean that someone has been repeating the same mistake for twenty years with increasing authority.

For all my sharp edges, I recognize the difference between personal responsibility and the convenient contempt for human weakness. I have experienced depression myself. I know how much distance can lie between “You just need to” and getting through another day. Preaching toughness is remarkably easy when someone else has to do the enduring. That experience deserves to be taken seriously.

Fortunately, life also supplies plenty of disasters we’re allowed to laugh about. Relationships, vanity, and our daily negotiations with common sense provide a dependable source of material. Lighting a fire in pouring rain is a respectable achievement. Apparently, so is bringing home the right butter. Military training covers surprisingly little of that.

I write directly, critically, and with a pronounced distrust of comfortable certainties. My readers are welcome to disagree. Keeping your own brain switched on while reading strikes me as an excellent precaution. A determined expression in an author photograph is hardly proof that the man is right.
