Rodney Harrison is a highly respected law enforcement professional with over 32 years of experience, marked by 10 years in executive leadership roles. Most recently, he served as the Police Commissioner for the Suffolk County (Long Island, New York) Police Department, where his leadership was pivotal in implementing innovative policing strategies and reviving the investigation of the Gilgo Beach serial killer case. He formed a multi-agency task force whose work ultimately led to the arrest of the now-confessed killer, resolving one of Suffolk County's most infamous unsolved cases. Before his tenure as Police Commissioner, Harrison had a distinguished career with the New York Police Department (NYPD). He held several key leadership positions, demonstrating his comprehensive understanding of public safety and criminal investigations. As Chief of Patrol, he managed operations and policies for high-profile parades and events such as the New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square, the NYC Marathon, and Thanksgiving Day Parade demonstrating his capacity to handle large-scale public safety logistics. He also worked in nearly every borough and precinct including Harlem and Staten Island (after the Eric Garner chokehold death). When he transitioned to Chief of Detectives, Harrison was responsible for directing criminal investigations across the entire department. He oversaw critical units, including the Homicide Squads, Hate Crimes, Special Victims Unit (SVU), and Narcotics. His role required balancing the complexities of high-stakes criminal cases while ensuring the department's investigative integrity and efficiency. As Chief of Department, Harrison oversaw over 35,000 uniformed members of the NYPD, the largest municipal police force in the United States. His leadership during this period was instrumental in guiding the NYPD's recovery efforts following the global COVID-19 pandemic. He implemented various strategies to help the NYPD and the residents of New York City regain their footing during an unprecedented crisis included focusing on safety protocols, ensuring essential services remained operational, and finding innovative ways to support both the police force and the community during a challenging time. Harrison has received several distinguished awards throughout his career, most notably is the Police Combat Cross, which he was awarded for his courageous actions as an undercover during a buy and bust operation in which his partner was gunned down on the street in Brooklyn. Rodney Harrison is a graduate of Springfield College and also completed Columbia University Police Management Institute program. He is currently a law enforcement contributor for CBS National News, a spokesman for crime fighting and victim advocacy, and is a public safety consultant and advisor to NY Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
