As the oldest boy of four siblings, Robin Girard was born in Lake Echo, a small town on mainland Nova Scotia. However, when school let out, at age eight, he was "shipped off" to an even smaller fishing community in rural Cape Breton called Little Lorraine. His grandfather would wake him up before the sun to make his way down to the boats and then the sea, for a day of fishing, and a lifetime of learning. During these informative years, Rob (Robbie to his grandparents) fell in love with the sea as well as his extended family there. "The sea taught me about the world, and my grandfather taught me about the sea." Today, married and living back on the mainland, Rob is a father to three boys, a full time firefighter, part-time teacher, sea kayaker, and lover of the outdoors.
