Richard Stanley was born and raised in South Africa where he trained as an anthropologist. He is known for his work as a film maker and documentarist covering events in Afghanistan, Africa and Haiti where he was initiated into Voudou. He has written and directed several feature films, including 'HARDWARE' (1990), 'DUST DEVIL” (1993) and 'COLOR OUT OF SPACE' (2019) which are widely considered to be cult classics. After losing control of 'THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU' (1995), he stayed on the island and went tribal, returning to the production incognito to play a dog man in the completed film – a mind bending experience chronicled in the award winning documentary 'LOST SOUL' (2014). His work as a paranormal journalist and esoteric historian includes 'OTTO RAHN – GRAIL HUNTER' (2025) and numerous cover stories for 'The Fortean Times'. Richard began work on 'WIND IN DRY BONES – The Proverbs of Jazrael' in 1977 when he was eleven years old, a collection of fantastical fables from whence 'The Man who made God' has been drawn.
