There is more to being human than the absence of disorder. For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the human condition: by suffering and flourishing, reason and emotion, love and friendship, and the timeless question of how to live. Those questions feel especially urgent today, as rapid change and growing uncertainty leave many of us searching for meaning, perspective, and a sense of direction. My writing brings together psychology, philosophy, literature, history, and the wisdom of the ancient world to help us think more clearly about what it means to be human—and how to live and flourish. My books have been translated into multiple languages and have received several literary and educational awards. I also write regularly for Aeon and Psychology Today. Alongside my writing, I'm a psychiatrist, philosopher, and Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. "Burton has a clear talent for narration and is able to distil complex topics into understandable gems." —BookLife "Neel is an incredibly insightful and elegant writer, with a deep knowledge of all he surveys." —Dr James Davies, psychotherapist and author "Burton's writing blends deep knowledge with lively anecdote and a genuine concern for how we might draw on the insights of psychology and philosophy to live a better life." —Dr Gareth Southwell, philosopher and author Ideas to Keep: "Depression: the healthy suspicion that modern life has no meaning and that modern society is absurd and alienating." "Many things can prolong your life, but only wisdom can save it." "The best books are those that tell you what you already know, but didn't know that you knew." "The highest purpose of education is to unlearn what we once took for granted, to replace certainty with subtlety, prejudice with compassion, and destiny with possibility." "There are essentially three types of people: those who love life more than they fear it, those who fear life more than they love it, and those who have no clue what I'm talking about."
