Michael Whatling grew up outside Montreal and has been trying to get back there ever since, especially for the food. He was a technical writer in Canada and Japan, which taught him how to make sentences boring on purpose, a skill he has hopefully abandoned.

He wrote A Vigil for Joe Rose (made the American Library Association’s Rainbow List), The French Baker’s War (a historical novel that briefly outsold better books on Amazon), and Unsettling Dreams (a collection of thirteen short stories of loss and discovery that five people claimed to have read). He also wrote the film The Dancing Dogs of Dombrova, which won awards, although, criminally, none for the writing.

To pay the bills, he works as a set teacher for child actors on films and TV shows, a job with unlimited snacks and a modest salary.
