"One of the most arresting new voices in fiction today" by SCMP Magazine, James’s writing explores identity, memory, and the quiet defiance of those left behind.

Born in Syria and raised in Hong Kong, Michael James attended Stanford University where he majored in Creative Writing. After graduation, he joined the United Nations Volunteers where he was posted to Las Ladrones, an archipelago shaped by tides of empire and memory. In these islands, time is tidal—what was lost returns in altered form, and what endures is always changed in some surprising way.

He resides in Dilao with his wife Alina and their companion Gaspar. He holds the Gabriel Lopez chair at the University of Las Ladrones.
