Michael G. Colburn writes historical mystery fiction and non-fiction about creativity, invention, and the building of meaningful work. He began writing after selling his last business, when a long interest in the creative process turned into a passion for storytelling. His early published books include the non-fiction titles Invent, Innovate & Prosper: A Step-By-Step Guide to Successful Inventing, How Julia Found Happiness and Financial Success: Your Guide to Making Money in a Service Business, and The Creator’s Notebook. These works reflect his practical engagement with invention, innovation, and the thoughtful development of creative and service-based enterprises. Colburn’s fiction is centered on the Lady Black Mystery series, set in Victorian London and colonial Australia. The novels follow Lady Edith Black, an intelligent and observant woman drawn into investigations shaped by social class, institutional power, and moral responsibility in the late nineteenth century. The first two books in the series are Stolen Brilliance: A Lady Black Mystery and Asylum Murders: A Lady Black Mystery. A third novel, The Fate of Precious Things, is currently in development. When he is not writing, Colburn and his wife, Mary Esther, enjoy travelling and taking long-distance walking journeys along historic routes, exploring landscapes, cultures, and the traces of the past that often inspire his stories.
