Mary Berelson is a debut novelist with a lifelong love of storytelling, creativity, and adventure. After a 30-year teaching career in the Lake Tahoe area, she retired to a small town in Tennessee where she finished bringing her first novel to life. Bicentennial Summer grew from a seed planted during a cross-country road trip she took with her father and sisters in 1976. What began as a memoir evolved into a coming-of-age story filled with heart, humor, and honesty. A teacher turned author, Mary has always believed in the power of young voices and the beauty of imperfect journeys. She spent years shaping her novel with the same care and creativity she once brought to the classroom—revising, reimagining, and drawing from real-life experiences. When she’s not writing, she enjoys vegetable gardening, quilting, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with her family (including the four-legged ones). Follow Mary to stay updated on new projects, behind-the-scenes moments, and her reflections on storytelling, family, and the winding roads we travel.
