General Hertling joined Florida Hospital in 2013, when he became senior vice president for global partnering, health performance strategy, and physician leadership. He is an energetic speaker and a published author; his book “Growing Physician Leaders” – about the new program at Florida Hospital – was released in May 2016.
Prior to joining the Florida Hospital, he was the Commanding General of US Army Europe. In that role, he led over 40,000 soldiers, cared for over 100,000 family members, and partnered with the armies of 50 countries in the European theater.
During his military career, LTG Hertling led soldiers at every level. From leading a 19 man tank platoon guarding the old East German-West German border in 1975 to commanding the Army’s only Armored Division in northern Iraq during the surge of 2007-8. Throughout his career, he garnered a reputation as a soldier-focused leader, a strategic thinker, and an innovative trainer.
Mark received a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy in 1975, and he holds Masters Degrees in History, International Relations and Exercise Physiology. He holds myriad US military awards, including three Distinguished Service Medals, several Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. He has also received awards from the governments of Germany, Poland, Romania, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
In 2013, Mark was appointed by President Obama to be one of 25 members of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sport and Nutrition. He also serves as an advisor to the non-profit organizations “Mission: Readiness,” “World T.E.A.M. Sport,” and “Operation Gratitude. He serves as a military and international affairs analyst for CNN, and he is an adjunct scholar for the Modern War Institute at the US Military Academy.
Mark is married to his best friend, Sue, and they have two married children, and four grandchildren.
