Dear Reader, This little book exists because I wanted to share with you some laughter and light from my life. If these stories make you smile, bring you new insight about your own life, or help you believe that there are better days in the future, I will be happy. Each tale is a real adventure from my experiences as wife, mother, business executive, and grandma. Before you begin, allow me to introduce you to the cast of characters (my family) and their ages today because these stories cover decades of adventures. In 2021, my husband Lyle turns 80 and I turn 79. Our children are Scott, 57; Susan, 54; Lainie, 52; Eddie, 49; Jeff, 41; and Annie, 36. You may have noticed there’s a big span between our first child and our last. We have a yours, mine, and ours family. Scott and Susan were born to Lyle and his first wife Lynn. My first husband Bill and I adopted Lainie and Eddie. Lyle and I together produced Jeff and Annie. People are intrigued by families with six children and ask endless questions. I got tired of saying, “Two are Lyle’s, two are mine, and two are ours.” In an effort to come up with new words for the same old tune, I told one inquisitive neighbor, “Yes, we have six children, and Lyle is the father of the first two and the last two.” I used that phrasing only once. And, yes, observant mathematicians, our son Scott was 21 when his sister Annie was born (old enough to be her father), and I was 43 (old enough to be her grandmother). You’ll hear lots more about all of that in subsequent books. 2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of my book EveryDay Matters: One Woman Savors Ordinary Days in Extraordinary Ways. For years, I have been wanting to develop an electronic book, and this year, this time seems perfect for Better Days. With hope and humor, Marie
